Today we have another first in our dynamic duo series — mother + daughter.
My mama is a body butter lover and I magically came across these two while searching for something special for her. Plus, I'm into the whole natural skincare thing.
Micaela + Dawn Marie are the ladies behind Drifter Organics — a line of allergy-friendly skincare products. They started Drifter 1.5 years ago and are currently in the middle of their Kickstarter campaign to help bring their full vision to life.
We're so excited to have them sharing the story of Drifter.
How do you collaborate together?
We're Micaela + Dawn Marie, a dynamic mother-daughter duo based in San Francisco who believe beauty should be simple. We started Drifter Organics in 2014 when Micaela was diagnosed with Celiac disease, which is the body's inability to process gluten. Micaela learned not only to be careful of what she ate, but also to be mindful of what she put on her skin. This meant she had to revamp her entire skincare regimen. With the amount of time we invested into trying to find allergy-friendly skincare products, we figured we might as well make them ourselves. And so Drifter Organics was born!
Why did you decide to become a duo (or trio) versus doing what you do solo?
Micaela: My mom is my best friend and we collaborate a lot on my blog, Oh My Drifter, she takes most all of my outfit pictures. Drifter Organics came about very organically when we started experimenting in our kitchen together making our own skincare.
Dawn Marie: Micaela's chronic allergies got me interested in holistic health and wellness. I love to cook and making skincare is another genre of cooking I never explored. Drifter Organics is the perfect marriage between Micaela's background in art direction, photography, and graphic design, and my interest in cooking.
What’s one challenge you have you faced in collaborating?
Our biggest challenge was getting the consistency of our body butters right. A lot of commercial-grade products contain synthetic substances that make the texture of the skincare silky and smooth. Working with all-natural ingredients is a lot harder! We have so many reject prototypes that are perfectly fine to use but are too oily or too hard or too gritty to sell. We ended up having to consult with a cosmetic chemist to tweak our recipe to make the texture smoother.
What's surprised you the most about your collaboration?
What surprised us the most was how (relatively) easy it was for us to come up with our scents compared to how difficult it was to finalize the texture of the base. We expected the opposite! We also were surprised how complex making skincare is when you intend to sell. There are a whole lot of certifications, regulations, and other tests we needed to acquire we never knew about until we wanted to launch Drifter Organics. It's proven—and is still proving—to be a huge learning experience for us. But it's incredibly rewarding to work on something together from the bare bones and watch it materialize. And doing something as a mother-daughter team is the best.
Who’s your favorite dynamic duo? Fiction or nonfiction.
Micaela: Definitely Jack Lemmon and Sandy Dennis. The Out-Of-Towners is one of my favorite movies.
Dawn Marie: Lucy Ricardo and Ethel Mertz. Micaela and I get ourselves in some very comical predicaments. Like when we got a huge tub of shea butter from our supplier but couldn't open up the canister at home. We almost weren't able to make body butters that day for that reason!
