"Don't worry about being original. Just be authentic." -Elizabeth Gilbert
If you guys haven't figured out by now, I'm crazy about Elizabeth Gilbert. Ever since I read Big Magic, she has had a special place in my heart. We just wrapped up our Inbox Workshop about Unique Perspective and this quote really stood out to me.
If you're not familiar with Unique Perspective, it's essentially that "thing" that makes your brand different and why you're customers need YOU over anyone else in your field. (If you need a refresher here, you can check out our post from our Brand Building Block series here.)
The biggest struggle we've found when teaching this concept is the struggle to feel truly original. The truth is, you probably aren't the only one doing what you do. We surely aren't the only branding studio in the world! And that's what make Unique Perspective so hard.
We all want to find that crazy original thing that makes us stand apart, but sometimes you can worry too much about being "one-of-a-kind." To make ourselves stand out, sometimes we stretch our brands in ways we never would have and lose sight of the originality inside ourselves.
So maybe your unique perspective isn't actually as unique as you want it to be. YOU will always be what is unique about your brand. And you can't force or contrive that. The more you make your brand authentically you, the easier it is to settle into a unique perspective that will truly work for you.
