One of the core values of 407 is collaboration and how two minds can be better than one. Inspired by that, we thought it would be fun to introduce you to other movers + shakers who are doing what they do best - together. We've asked our duos to each answer the same five questions. This way we can see their thought process individually and the overlap.
Today, we're excited to introduce you to the ladies behind Propelle, Emily + Kate. Propelle exists to create space for women to connect—both online and off—about business and entrepreneurship. The first time we came across this duo, we fell in love with their mission of helping women entrepreneurs take flight.
One place where they help propelle women to achieve their goals and dreams, is in their member's only Facebook community, Rock It. This is a space where you can get all the support you need to function at your highest potential.
Without further ado, here's Emily + Kate sharing their collaboration journey.
How do you collaborate together?
Emily: Every aspect of Propelle is a beautiful collaboration; from the big picture mission and vision that drives everything we do to the daily minutia of blog post titles. Our strengths are complementary, and the gaps in our skills are filled in by the other. Kate is brilliant at the small touches that have a big impact, where I'm more of a big picture girl. Together we make one hell of a team.
Kate: We work together in so many ways! We each bring something unique to Propelle. I love working with Emily as she’s smart, a great writer, an excellent coach, and she says yes to most of my marketing shenanigans. :) I’m very proud to call her my business partner!
One thing we learned early on is that the key to successful partnerships is establishing clear roles within the business. Emily manages the website, graphic design, and the Twitter account. I manage our Instagram and bookkeeping/finances. We share responsibilities like newsletter writing, blogging, and making videos for our Rock It! community.
And as with any relationship, communication is so important. We stay in touch daily via our Daily Five running document and have a weekly call to make sure our priorities for the week are aligned.
Why did you decide to become a duo versus doing what you do solo?
Emily: I'm the kind of person who thrives when partnering with other people on a project. There is something about collaborating that is incredibly energizing for me. Perhaps it's the accountability aspect of it all—of knowing that someone else is relying on me to get things done and to hustle hard—or perhaps it's simply how I'm wired.
Which made it a total no-brainer to be partnering with Kate. From our very first coffee date, I knew that I wanted to work with her on *something*. Our original idea was to run a one-off workshop. We created a name for what we were doing, set up a website, and then threw a party to launch it. When 100+ women showed up, we realized we were on to something much bigger.
Having Kate as a business partner has been a total gift. She's level-headed, smart, and loves to have fun. She helps me take myself less seriously, pushes me to be a better person, and encourages me to stretch myself and take risks. She also challenges me when I need a swift kick in the pants.
Kate: We kept running into each other at the same events and found we had a similar passion for entrepreneurship. We wanted to create an opportunity for women entrepreneurs to connect and thus Propelle was born. Thanks to Emily, our brand was strong right out of the gate. And when over 100 women attended our first event we knew we were on to something special.
What’s one challenge you have you faced in collaborating?
Emily: Honestly? Not having enough time to do all of the things that we want to do! With a 16-month old at home, it's gotten hard to take on new projects or to go to all of the events that I want to attend. I sometimes feel guilty when I have to say no to things or like I'm not pulling my weight with the amount of hours I work in comparison.
Kate: We are completely virtual (which has many perks!) but it would definitely benefit us from being in the same room every once in a while. We’re working on making that something that occurs on a more regular basis.
What's surprised you the most about your collaboration?
Emily: It always feels new! I am constantly learning new things about Kate, about myself, and about the kind of things that I love doing. It's been super fun to watch how we have each evolved, and
Kate: Working with Emily has helped me to grow in so many ways! She has introduced me to people and books that have changed my life. She’s inspired me to become more serious about meditation, journaling, and sharing my personal experiences (even when it feels terrifying).
Who’s your favorite dynamic duo? Fiction or nonfiction. Why?
Emily: Rizzoli & Isles. They are hella smart, smokin' hot, and the very best at what they do. The very definition of a dynamic duo. And they ALWAYS have each other's back. Doesn't get much better than that.
Kate: Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. They are so smart, witty, and hilarious. They both respect each other very much, and you can tell they are having a BLAST on screen and off. What more could you want in a partner?
Are you in love with these ladies as much as we are?!
Emily and Kate have a running a document of five questions they answer every day and it has helped them grow their business exponentially. And luck for all of us, they're sharing it with us all. Head over here for your free download of The Daily Five.
