Today we're introducing a new series to our little 'ol blog.
One of the core values of our business is collaboration and how two minds are better than one. Inspired by that, we thought it would be fun to introduce you to other movers + shakers who are doing what they do best together. The series will feature mini interviews with dynamic duos where we'll ask for insight into their collaboration.
We've asked our duos to each answer the same five questions. This way we can see their thought process individually and the overlap.
This week is a test run of sorts featuring... Drum roll please... US!
How do you collaborate together?
Kristin: I think what makes our collaboration different than many is that we don't have two different skills. At the end of the day, we're both designers. And I'd say we do pretty much everything together. It's not a situation where one of us handles one project and the other does another. We agree to projects together. We agree on the details together. And we do the projects together.
Lindsay: Kristin and I work together to help small businesses build their brand and get the marketing materials they need to make money doing what they love. We are both designers, so the key to our collaboration is having no personal ownership in anything we create. We are both completely involved and invested in anything we produce.
Why did you decide to become a duo versus doing what you do solo?
Kristin: One of our first blog posts went in depth about this question. You can read it here. But the cliffs notes version: I believe that two are better than one. Having a partner challenges me to produce better work, motivates me, and it's just more fun than working for myself.
Lindsay: Unlike Kristin, when we first left school I didn't really have any plans to own a business or do much freelance work. As Kristin freelanced, she would occasionally share her concept work with me and I found myself getting more and more invested in giving suggestions and doing the work with her. She asked me if I wanted to do a simple client project together "officially" and it went so well, I knew that us working together was just right. We've been doing the work together ever since!
What’s one challenge you have you faced in collaborating?
Kristin: Distance. I'm in St. Louis and Lindsay is in Dallas almost 90% of the time. And 90% of the time it isn't a problem. Technology has made it so easy to work + communicate from anywhere but there are times it can get real annoying. Like, when all we want to do is set up a bank account, but we both have to be there to sign the forms.
Lindsay: "Perfecting" our process has been a big (but weirdly fun?!) challenge for us. Every experience has been a little bit of trial and error, but each experience is bringing us closer to finding our flow.
What's surprised you the most about your collaboration?
Kristin: The day I learned that Lindsay didn't know you could reply to tweets and was missing out on the whole conversational aspect of one of the greatest social media platforms there is was pretty surprising. But in all seriousness, in the few short months we've been partners, I love how much we've learned from each other. Even though we both do the same things, learning where the others strengths are and growing because of it has been a favorite thing of mine.
Lindsay: How business savvy Kristin had become during her time freelancing before me! I couldn't have made such a smooth transition into business without her guidance.
Who’s your favorite dynamic duo? Fiction or nonfiction. Why?
Kristin: Phineas + Ferb. A little embarrassing, but Lindsay + I watched a lot of Disney in our college days and these two have remained two of my favorites. They are best buds, they're adventurous, they're creative, they're clever. Everything I strive for with my partner in crime!
Lindsay: Amy + Rory. I'm not only a Harry Potter fan. I'm a Doctor Who fan as well! I'm a total sucker for a couple that kicks ass together. They're brave, but silly. And above all, they are incredibly loyal.
Who are some of your favorite dynamic duos that are kicking ass together? Leave a comment. We would love to feature them in the future!
