This morning I was listening to Being Boss podcast's most recent episode (#44 Creativity and Magic) and feeling jealous of how AMAZING the Being Boss NOLA trip sounded. As they were describing the trip and the other bosses on it, something Emily said made me laugh out loud. And then it made me think.
"These girls are woo woo as fuck.... And it made me want to fly my freak flag a little higher!"
Is this a completely bizarre pull quote? Absolutely. But it speaks so much to how we should behave in our business to be true to our brands, because what makes us "freaks" usually tends to be what makes us so perfect for our dream customers.
Preach the things YOU believe in.
It can be easy to hop on board with the hot topics and general buzz. And if you agree with it, it’s great to join in on the conversation! But what you should be shouting above the crowd are the things that are important to you personally. What holds that special place in your heart?
These things may be serious and a part of what you sell. But maybe it’s just something you’re passionate about. Maybe you're a super yogi that is all about getting in tune with the universe and your spirituality. Or maybe you totally geek out over scientific journals. Whatever your thing is, it’s a big part of you and a big part of your brand.
Your freak flag doesn’t have to be all that freaky.
Sometimes it just means sharing the weirder details of a story. For example, Kristin and I began our friendship as random roommates our freshman year in college. And when we started sending messages trying to get to know each other, we discovered that we both had bought the exact same bedspread from Anthropologie. We like to think this was fate.
That story has gotten us a client before. How? Because of the BEDSPREADS. One silly little detail in our story. And that client turned out to be a total dream project.
You do YOU.
It always sounds so cliché, but just being who you are is the best brand you can build for yourself! People like people. And, people will KNOW when you’re faking it.
So get cozy with who you are. I've completely embraced my Harry Potter obsession and Kristin and accepted that she #cantstopwontstop buying herself fancy candles.
What are YOUR freak flags? Share them with us! And let's all start flying them a little higher.
